The Nature published an article on epilepsy research, contributed by scientists at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering An international team led by Czech scientists has demonstrated that one of the basic natural principles is also involved in emergence of epileptic seizures. Revealing the existence of the so-called critical deceleration principle in the epileptic brain assumes that the seizure is preceded by a gradual loss of stability and resistance of the brain, which becomes more prone to the onset of seizures. The results obtained provide important insights into understanding the mechanisms of seizure formation, opens up space to explain the impact of many other epileptic events, and unify the current - often contradictory - theory of seizure. The results of the research bring new possibilities to explain the causes of loss of brain stability, to develop seizure risk prediction techniques, to adjust treatment depending on the rate of seizure risk, or to increase the effectiveness of healing brain stimulation. Researchers at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Institute of Physiology at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in cooperation with colleagues from the Institute of Computer Science of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the Second Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University and colleagues from foreign universities in Melbourne, Oxford and Birmingham have demonstrated on experimental models and real-world patients that detectable changes in brain activity can precede an epileptic seizure. The XGLU glucometer by students of Faculty of Electrical Engineering collects further achievements Two years ago, Marek Novák’s team from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering developed a blood glucose measurement device - an XGLU meter. With this device, graduates of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering have already won a number of competitions, including the prestigious Microsoft Imagine Cup. In September, the XGLU won the IoT Future Hub contest organized by Vodafone, and in early October, Ing. Marek Novák ranked second in the Czech Inventor survey. Ing. Libuse Petrzilkova |

Scientists from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague and the Czech Institute of Egyptology of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University introduce a new scientific discipline – cyber-Egyptology The Czech Institute of Egyptology of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University under the leadership of Prof. Miroslav Bárta has been developing long-term research into the dynamics of the development of complex societies based on the study of the anatomy of the internal dynamics of ancient Egyptian civilization. Since 2006, one of the fundamental activities in this field has been the creation and intensive filling of a database of officials buried at Abusir and the adjacent cemeteries at Saqqara, Giza and other selected sites led by Dr Veronika Dulíková. In view of the extent of the database, it was necessary to find methods that can cope with fragmentarily preserved information. This task has been addressed by Dr Radek Mařík of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Czech Technical University in Prague. Gradually, the Egyptology-cybernetic team succeeded to apply several cybernetics and artificial intelligence methods; together, they acquired a grant from the Czech Science Foundation GACR for a project named “Complex network methods applied to ancient Egypt data in the Old Kingdom (2700–2180 BC)”. The main objective of the project is to develop a new approach to the analysis and interpretation of data available from the age of the pyramid builders and the use of semi-automatic methods in its processing. This has defined cyber-Egyptology as a new branch of science. Ing. Libuše Petržílková |

28th Symposium on Plasma Physics and Technology The Symposium on Plasma Physics and Technology (SPPT) has a long tradition and is usually held biennially. This will be the 28th Symposium. It was originally founded for the presentation of results of the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (IPP CAS) in 1967. Since 1969 it has gradually become a Czechoslovak forum in this branch and many famous foreign scientists have made presentations. Since 1993 it has been held in co-operation with the Department of Physics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (FEE CTU) in Prague. The symposium is of the European importance. There will be about 150-200 participants. doc. RNDr. Jan Píchal, CSc. |

Workshop and the 18th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA 2018) Following a well-established tradition, ICRA 2018 will present recent progress in the representation theory of finite-dimensional associative algebras. This year it will be the 18th event in a row (starting with the year 1974). Past conferences took place e.g. in Japan, USA, Brazil, China, Canada or Mexico. Lectures and talks will be connected to algebra, algebraic topology, category theory, combinatorics, logic, and geometry. Around 300 participants are expected. RNDr. Miroslav Korbelář, Ph.D. |
