CTU student awarded the prestigious "2013 Google PhD Fellowship"

Lukáš Neumann, a PhD student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University has been awarded the prestigious "2013 Google Europe Fellowship in Computer Vision". In each area of computer science, at most one Google Fellow is selected. The CTU is the only university in Central and Eastern Europe to receive this honour.

The program, founded by Google in 2009, was originally aiming at PhD students in the USA and Canada. It has been gradually extended to Europe, China and Australia. Its goal is to support brilliant postgraduate students:

"the Google Fellowship Programs recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional work in computer science, related disciplines, or promising research areas".

The fellowship has regularly been awarded to students of top-notch universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, ETH Zurich, École Normale Supérieure in Europe, MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon and Caltech in USA or Technion in Israel. The CTU has historically been the only Czech university to receive the award.

Lukáš Neumann.s selection is based on his excellent results in the area of text detection and recognition in images and videos. Lukáš, supervised by Professor Jiří Matas at the Centre for Machine Perception of the Department of Cybernetics, has been participating in Czech Science Foundation project Centre for Large-Scale Multi-modal Data and EU project MASELTOV (FP7-ICT-288587).
