Anotation:
I) | | The B2 English Exam is a compulsory subject for all Faculty of Electrical Engineering students at the Czech Technical University. According to the Study and Examination Rules and Regulations for Students at CTU (Part III, Article 4), a compulsory subject is one “whose completion is a necessary condition in order to successfully complete the study programme.” In addition, this requires the “passing of an examination evaluated on the scale A, B, C, D, or E…” (SERR Part III, Article 6). |
II) | | According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an international standard for describing language ability, the definition of an English language learner who has achieved the B2 (Upper-Intermediate) level is one who “…can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.” |
III) | | Students who have successfully passed an approved international exam within the past five years may present their certificate to the Department of Languages, Faculty of Electrical Engineering.Upon approval, students are then exempt from both the Written Test and the Oral Part. Study targets:
I) | | The B2 Exam is a "compulsory subject," as discussed above. |
II) | | In addition, students who achieve a final grade / mark of 70% or more on the B0B04B2Z Anglický jazyk B2-zkouška – B2 English Exam [starting from Winter 2021/2022] may request a Confirmation of Language Level certificate. |
III) | | The CEFR level indication on individual certificates is determined at the discretion of the Language Department. The CEFR level indicated on certificates will reflect only the result of the Written Examination. All parts of the exam must be complete according to all instructions. |
IV) | | Send requests to BcA. Michael Ynsua at: ynsuamic@fel.cvut.cz This certificate will be accepted by the International Office at the Rectorate, CTU in Prague, as proof of appropriate language level and may be included in the application file submitted by students. Request should include date of birth (format = day / month / year). |
Content:
The B2 English Exam consists of ONE MANDATORY PART and one optional part:
I) | | WRITTEN TEST (MANDATORY) (see below for a further description) |
1) | | A 2-hour examination in which students demonstrate the ability to: |
a) | | listen, understand and transfer information |
b) | | read, comprehend and answer text-based questions |
c) | | show knowledge of grammatical structures and vocabulary / word formation |
d) | | complete sentences and write a short academic text using correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and style / format. |
2) | | A minimum of 50% of the total points is required in order to pass the Written Test (No Exceptions). |
II) | | ORAL PART (OPTIONAL) |
1) | | The Oral Part is only offered to students who achieve 50% or more on the Written Part of the Exam. It will be conducted on a day/time agreed upon by the student and an examiner; however, it will NOT on the same day as the Written Part. |
2) | | The Oral Part is a 15-20 min (+/-) speaking examination in which students are assessed on their ability to communicate in English, and the format is as follows: |
a) | | Students are given approx. 10 minutes to read a short text for comprehension and discussion. Dictionaries / devices MAY NOT BE USED during this ‘preparation’ time. |
b) | | Students will be required to: |
i) | | give a brief summary of their text |
ii) | | correctly pronounce and define or explain selected words / phrases from their text |
iii) | | answer discussion-style questions based on the overall theme of the text |
3) | | ALL PASSING GRADES FOR THE WRITTEN PORTION OF THE EXAM WILL BE ACCEPTED AS FINAL GRADES (WITHOUT THE NEED FOR AN ORAL PART OF THE EXAMINATION). |
90-100% = A;
80-89% = B;
70-79% = C;
60-69% = D;
50-59% = E.
4) | | If for some reason a student would like to take the oral examination, they may do so– but it is not required… and it WILL NOT be the same day as the written examination. PLEASE NOTE that the final grade / mark for this exam DOES NOT count towards a student’s cumulative overall gradepoint average. |
5) | | IMPORTANT – if a student chooses to take the oral part of the examination, the final grade could be lower than the original written result. For those who choose to take the oral part of the examination - should the resulting final grade be lower than the original written result - the final grade CANNOT be changed back to the original written result. |

2) | | PART 2 (10 Points) Text with Comprehension Questions (multiple choice) |
C) | | GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY (6 Parts – 50 Points Total): |
1) | | PART 1 (10 points) Prepositions (Gapfill – fill in the correct missing word) |
2) | | PART 2 (10 points) Gerund or Infinitive (Gapfill – fill in the correct missing word) |
3) | | PART 3 (6 points) Countable / Uncountable (multiple choice) |
4) | | PART 4 (6 points) Modal Verbs (multiple choice) |
5) | | PART 5 (6 points) Relative Pronouns (multiple choice) |
6) | | PART 6 (12 points) Academic Vocabulary (Gapfill – fill in the correct form of the word) |
D) | | WRITING (3 Parts – 30 Points Total): |
1) | | PART 1 (15 points) Key Word Sentence Transformations: A complete sentence followed by a KEY WORD and a second sentence which has a gap in it (2 – 5 words). Students have to use the KEY WORD to complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first sentence. |
2) | | PART 2 (5 points) Recognizing the Parts of a Paragraph: Sentences for an academic paragraph that must be put into the proper order – 2 of the sentences do not belong and are to be ignored. |
3) | | PART 3 (10 points) Formal Writing / Academic Writing CHOOSE ONE (A or B) |
A) | | = A formal letter (application / inquiry or complaint) |
B) | | = A descriptive academic-style text / short essay (MAPS or a PROCESS) |

Requirements:
All students MUST fulfil their B0B04B1K B1 klasifikovaný zápočet BEFORE they can register for the B0B04B2Z WRITTEN EXAM (a student might be able to register for the subject without this – HOWEVER – it will NOT be possible to select a day/time for the actual exam until this requirement has been fulfilled).
