Where do you currently work and what is the scope of your work?

Currently I serve as Associate Professor and Vice-Dean of Science, Research and Art at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague.

What has your doctoral studies given you for your current career?

Extension of understanding scientific research in more fields of science and in various cultural milieu. This is very important for my current position of a Vice-Dean of Science, Research and Art, as Architecture is a very comprehensive multidisciplinary field. My task, inter alia, is to develop academical research in 5 different fields: Arts (Architectural Theory and Design), Social Sciences (Spatial and Town Planning), Humanities (History of Architecture and Monument Conservation), Technology (Structures and Building Technology) and Environmental Sciences (Landscape Architecture). This requires a different approach to different types of scientific research.

Where have you been during your doctoral studies and where have you been at postdoc?

My first PhD study which I started almost 20 years ago was focused on structural mechanics in historic structures. After completing it I was invited by Professor John A. Ochsendorf to MIT Boston/Cambridge to a short research visit (In 2012, I spent 3 months in the USA, partly in California and partly in Massachusetts). At MIT a special way of teaching structural mechanics to architects based on graphic statics was developed cca 30 years ago. I got acquainted with this way of teaching and I realised that the Czech 19th century engineering tradition could be beneficial for this way of education, too. After returning home, I started studying History of Technology at CTU and I was very lucky to have been included in the double-degree program between CTU and Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. I spent one academic year (part by part during three years) in Paris and a short research visit at ETH Zurich. After completing and defending my PhD, I started to serve as a tutor for a post-doc from Université de Strasbourg, France, and later as a vice-dean of science, research and art at my home faculty at CTU.
