Where do you currently work and what is the scope of your work?

I’m working at Google Switzerland at the moment as a tech lead and manager of a midsize team. As members of an Internationalization group we focus on improving user experiences in many products across Google. It involves large scale server-side and on-device user modeling, federated machine learning and many integrations across the teams. I also spent several years of my tenure in California, Google HQ in Mountain View as I grew the team between the offices.

What has your doctoral studies given you for your current career?

During my years as a Ph.D. student I was inspired by my colleagues and supervisors to a methodical approach to new problems and develop analytical and critical thinking. I learned how to efficiently work with large-scale data and apply various machine learning techniques to achieve the goals. Building on the top of the prior cutting-edge expertise, pushing the state-of-the-art results a bit further and seeing other researchers around the world to cite and follow up on our own work was very motivating.

Where have you been during your doctoral studies and where have you been at postdoc?

Probably the most influential experience which kicked off my PhD was an internship at Microsoft Research Cambridge UK. Besides this, I visited several top conferences in Istanbul, Colorado Springs in the US, or on Crete, and had a great time and learned a lot at various PhD Summer schools in Cambridge, Zurich and Sicily.
